What is crime exactly? In simple words crime can be defined as an act that violates the right of a person or a group of persons or their property and also at times endangers lives of people. However this is a very simple definition and the actual definition of crime could be quite huge and would be too long for this article.  However crime is not only a violation of person’s rights; it could also cause lot of damage to the life of many people and also could endanger the safety of public in general.  There are many ways in which examples of crime could be given. A simple example of crime could include the firing of a weapon inside the city limits; by doing so you are putting at risk the lives of many people who live within that range of that particular weapon you could by this act kill some people who could be innocent victim of such an action done by you.

Crime affects each one of us in some way or the other. Hence to prevent people from committing crime there are many laws which have been enacted by the authorities which makes crime a punishable offence. This is done to protect every man woman and child from the ill effects of crime.  Why do people commit crime? This is also a very simple question and cannot be answered in one or two lines. There are many reasons why people resort to crime.  If you look at criminals and their background you would find that most of the criminals get into acts of crime because of a very disturbed childhood where they have not been given the right kind of love, compassion and direction either from their parents or at school or from society at large. Such people become frustrated and at times they become mentally sick and cynical which leads them to becoming criminals. Instead of painting all criminals with the same brush we should try and understand the reason for their actions and try to remedy it.

Importance Of Elections In A Democracy

We all know that, leaders through out the world are elected when people join together to form an organization which is also known as a political party and we have many such political parties joining together and fighting out and debating on public and private issues based on which a government is chosen for a particular period of time. So there are many ways in which leaders are chosen and the best way of choosing them which has been proven by experience over the last many centuries is through the method of elections.

An election is very important for an individual because it gives him a chance to elect a person who he thinks will perform to his expectations and will help in solving problems which are very important to his day to day life. Choosing the right person is very important because once you choose a person or a party and put them in power they would stay there for the next 4 years. Hence removing them all of a sudden would be difficult though not impossible. Hence it would be better to avoid such a situation and get a person elected according to your choice.

Taking part in elections is very important and unless this is done the government which comes in power would not be the true representatives of the people’s will. In any democracy at least 60% of the eligible voters should take part in elections and install a government of their own choice. However what we find is that in the modern society and people belonging to the younger age are not very much inclined towards politics and they do not seem to have that much belief in the institution of elections and democracy. This is indeed a dangerous sign and apathy on the part of the youngsters could prove to be disasters in the long run.

Elections are the corner-stone for any vibrant democracy to function properly and we as responsible citizens have to take all steps to see that we perform this duty with due diligence.

Young Voters And Their Importance In A Democracy

In any country which believes in democracy youth hold the key to development and strengthening of the age-old institutions which is very important. In fact even in a country like America young people are the future of this country and they make up almost 20% of the voting population. Every election year, as it has been happening over the last and few centuries, several campaigns and advertisements and commercials run by different political parties try to target young people; that could be one of the reasons, why the presidential candidates know the importance of the youth as a force which can make or break their winning chances.

But there are some problems as regards young voters are concerned. Today’s youth is not very interested in politics and by nature they are apathetic or they do not show much interest in voting. So it is the responsibility of various political parties and the democratic system to bring out these youngsters from their slumber and make them queue in the voting booths. There are some facts which are not very encouraging for example in 2004 it is widely believed that only 47% of the people between 18 and 24 took part in the elections. This is really disappointing, but things have started looking up and if you go by the 2008 census 78% of age group are registered to vote but out of them only 50% really turned up.

This itself is a slight improvement but much more needs to be done.  There are different shades of opinion amongst the youngsters themselves. There is one group who feel that they make up a large percent of the voting population and if as youngsters they don’t vote then the future of the country and democracy itself would be put under doubt. And there is another group which is not very keen on voting and they have a belief that voting does not believe does not make much difference in the way people run the government. The cynicism associated with politics amongst the youth must be removed.

Health Care

Health care is an issue on almost every voter’s agenda and radar. The health care policies affect every American. Knowing the issues, proposed changes, and how they will impact your life is important for all voters. Young voters, like the senior voters are a large part, about 20% of the voting population. Their voice matters and does make a difference. The issues important to the young voters in relation to health care reform may not be the same as seniors – it is hard to worry about retirement, etc when you have barely just begun your working life, but health care reform affects the young as well.
All media outlets are biased, one way or the other. They tell the truth, but maybe not all the facts, or they tell them in a certain way hoping to influence their target audience. This factor is impossible to avoid or eliminate, so how do you get the facts in order to make your own informed, knowledgeable opinion, based on the information and not someone else’s agenda?

One answer is for you to do your own research, get the facts from as close to the source as possible rather than the news media.

Another way is to know what perspective each news station you watch is leaning toward, and watch or listen to news media reports from more than one perspective and then disseminate the basic facts from the opinion.

Both ways are time consuming, but if you want to be informed and understand how the health care, or any issues, will affect your life, and which candidates support which ideas, you need to do your homework. You need to be properly informed about the issues at hand when you vote or you are doing yourself and your fellow voters a disservice. Vote armed with the facts.

Jobs and the Economy

One of the most important issues for young voters is the economy and the job market. Young voters are graduating from high school, trade schools, or college and looking to begin their careers. The high unemployment rates, lack of jobs, and low wages are making it difficult if not impossible to begin building an independent life. Rent and home prices are higher than the wages would suggest, making living alone virtually impossible. Young people must either get roommates, or remain living with their parents longer than children in previous generations needed to do. This puts a strain on both the child, now an adult; wanting to begin an independent life, make their own rules and decisions. The parents, in return, expect to have a quiet home, privacy, and move on to the next phase of their lives as well.

The need for the economy to increase, unemployment rates to go down, and wages to increase smacks the young voters in the face on a daily basis. They have a tougher time getting work, even if they are educated, they are often edged out by the people with experience. While youth offers fresh ideas, innovation, and change, many employers are looking for experience and stability to get through the tough times. The job market and economic issues affect the day to life of voters, and therefore is an immediate priority.

Politically, the young voters are looking for candidates who can make a difference, turn the economic situation around and create jobs for the long term. They do not want short-term fixes that will last a year or two at most; they need and want to see the possibility of a stable, successful future as they plan the next phase of their lives. They are willing and able to step up and take whatever action is needed to get results, but they also want to know it will help their future.
