Government Educational Loans

Educational loans given by governments are usually for students and people who can not afford education on their own. For such people unless they get a helping hand from the government their educational dreams would come to a stop. But there are many ways for such students to complete higher studies if they are able to get educational loans from the government.

In fact there are various kinds of educational loans available today and they can be classified under two heads. They are federal sponsored educational loans and private sponsored educational loans. Federal educational loans are those loans which are given by the government directly and private educational loans are usually given by private financiers and banks. The beneficiaries of such educational loans could be undergraduate students, higher education students and even elderly persons and parents who wish to pursue their education on a higher platform and further more they could be classified according to the field which a student chooses. Educational loans are also given for law-school students, medical school students, dental school students and students who are undertaking MBA and general graduate courses.
The difference between federal loans and private loans is basically the cost of the loans. The government loans or the federal loans are offered at much lower rates of interest since the interest component is paid by the government. One such common federal loan is known as Stafford Loans. Again under Stafford loans there could be two sub-divisions, i.e. subsidized Stafford loans and unsubsidized Stafford loans.

Subsidized Stafford loans are meant for those sections of society who are very poor and who cannot even afford to pay the interest. These loans do not carry any interest but to get such loans the candidates are required to give proof of low income and other details. On the other hand unsubsidized Stafford loans are those which do not required proof of income and any one is eligible for these loans irrespective of their state of income. Another difference between subsidized loans and unsubsidized loans is the interest component which is absorbed by the government for subsidized loans.

Making Your Vote Count

Voting is a quintessential right of all free people in a society where someone other than a dictator rules. While politicians may be a bunch of pandering, lying wind bags, at least they occasionally get something done that helps the common people. Couple that with the fact that they very rarely openly have people killed, and the political system (while certainly not perfect) does have some potential. But of course, you have to be registered to vote if you want to have any say in the political process. The Europe and Canada 411 say that voting is so important, people should actually be fined if they try to cop out of their responsibility to their own interests. While the United States is not so aggressive about it, maybe we should be. Being a voter is a great privilege, but it’s also an important responsibility.

If you want to vote, great! Keep in mind that every state has its own individual laws regarding registration, party declaration and identification rules. If you ever have a question, you can call up your local government and ask them for the specifics. However, there is at least one step you need to follow if you want to register. There is a National Mail Voter Registration form that you can download from the Internet, and send in from anywhere in the country. As long as you do this a month or so in advance, you can then focus on finding your local polling center.

The good news with a lot of municipalities is that, as an election approaches, you will receive a post card, which tells you when and where you should vote. If you live in a major city, you might actually be surprised at how close you live to your voting center. However, if this does not reach you for whatever reason, you can actually use a service such as 411 to find your center.

Importance Of Elections In A Democracy

We all know that, leaders through out the world are elected when people join together to form an organization which is also known as a political party and we have many such political parties joining together and fighting out and debating on public and private issues based on which a government is chosen for a particular period of time. So there are many ways in which leaders are chosen and the best way of choosing them which has been proven by experience over the last many centuries is through the method of elections.

An election is very important for an individual because it gives him a chance to elect a person who he thinks will perform to his expectations and will help in solving problems which are very important to his day to day life. Choosing the right person is very important because once you choose a person or a party and put them in power they would stay there for the next 4 years. Hence removing them all of a sudden would be difficult though not impossible. Hence it would be better to avoid such a situation and get a person elected according to your choice.

Taking part in elections is very important and unless this is done the government which comes in power would not be the true representatives of the people’s will. In any democracy at least 60% of the eligible voters should take part in elections and install a government of their own choice. However what we find is that in the modern society and people belonging to the younger age are not very much inclined towards politics and they do not seem to have that much belief in the institution of elections and democracy. This is indeed a dangerous sign and apathy on the part of the youngsters could prove to be disasters in the long run.

Elections are the corner-stone for any vibrant democracy to function properly and we as responsible citizens have to take all steps to see that we perform this duty with due diligence.

Iraq and Afghanistan

The war in Iraq and Afghanistan is an important political issue for young voters. They are in the age group of the men and women serving in the war zones. If they went to college and were part of the reserves to help pay for college, they have been or could be deployed to active duty. Many had to take time off from college because they were deployed. While that is the risk they take when they sign up for the reserves, most don’t expect to see action. Most reserve units have been activated during this war. Young voters are losing friends, family, and even their own lives serving our country. While this is honorable, courageous, and deserving of our support and respect, nobody wants to die.

The war is an immediate issue to young voters. Their lives are on the line. The issues, reasons, and choices made by the military and government impact their lives in very real, tangible ways. The young men and women serving want to come home and return to their lives – college, jobs, and families. They need to know their leaders are working to make that happen. The secrecy, changes, and continued long-term plans to remain a visible force in Iraq and Afghanistan is disheartening at best for many Americans, especially those in harms way and for the people who love and care about them.

The policies surrounding the deployment and continued military presence in the Middle East are part of their every day existence. What needs to be done to bring them home? Who can they count on to support and enact the process of removing all military presence in Iraq and Afghanistan in a timely and safe manner? This is the action most of the young voters want to see happen. Stand up and let your voice be heard.

Media Outlets

In the past, people got their news and information about current events, politics, and breaking news from the daily newspaper, radio and the 6 o’clock news. Now there are so many more media outlets to get your information, any time, any place. You no longer have to wait until after dinner or the next morning to find out the most current news. Social networking, like Facebook and Twitter break the latest news in real-time, without delays that affect print news and evening news. This also means much of the information is not verified or filtered at all before it is released. This has both positive and negative results.

The positive side is that people can watch events unfold in real-time, get more direct from the source information, and more points of view as everyone tells their version, understanding, and interpretation of the events.

The negative side is that if there is no time to verify facts and data before the information spreads to the social media platforms, misinformation can be believed as true and factual, which can lead to mistaken conclusions. Once it is out, it is hard to correct false information. This can be seen by the fact that people often verify things using websites such as snopes.com. It is good that people don’t just believe everything they read on the internet, but enough people do that it becomes a problem when you don’t know what information to believe and what to take with a grain of salt.

The new platforms for media outlets have changed the face of information and news profoundly, but if you want verified facts, your best bet is still the 6 o’clock news, or the printed newspaper, or a reputable news sources webpage, not your high school classmates Facebook status, unless they are linking it to a verified news source. This does not mean news sources don’t make mistakes, but the chances of being misled are substantially lower.

Using the Internet To Teach Kids About Politics: Resources That Can Broaden Horizons

Whether or not we want to admit it, or fully embrace the situation, the simple fact is that our children are growing up in a technologically advanced world much different from that which we remember from our own childhood. On the bad side of things, this can lead to little ones who are easily over-stimulated or who have a hard time using their own imagination.
On the good side of things, there are so many tools now at our disposal thanks to the internet which can be used, to teach important life lessons and other skills so essential to being a productive adult. One of those areas where parents should strive to inform their children is civics, or the political processes of the country in which they live.
Due to the fact that our society is so heavily proliferated with internet knowledge and electronics, there are a number of ways that these new tools can be used to accomplish just that. Below is a simple list of resources.

1. Google
This will either seem like a no-brainer, or maybe something that has never been done before, but this really is a culture nowadays where people turn to the search engines for answers. So much politically themed, and age/level appropriate content can be found with a few simple keystrokes.

2. Youtube
This obviously operates on a similar principle as above, however the content is all user generated, and video based. This is a great place to go as a parent to find multimedia rich, age appropriate content for kids wanting to learn about important issues. The White House has a Youtube channel, and the President sometimes responds to questions submitted.

3. Snag Films-
This is another video content site full of interesting and engaging documentaries on a wide variety of important topics ranging from health care to civil rights and beyond. There is a special learning section with additional content.

Do Young Voters Conform to Political Stereotypes?

The most recent presidential election showed more than anything how the political playing field is changing. Traditional campaign trail activities, like public speaking and flesh pressing are taking a backseat as younger voters seek their answers elsewhere. The Obama campaign received a boost via a range of online media – from celebrity endorsed videos posted on YouTube to peer campaigning through social networking sites such as Facebook, Twitter and MySpace, demonstrating in a powerful way the shift in the hierarchy of political influence.

As one traditional “given” in the world of politics falls away, pundits are beginning to question what exactly can be taken for granted when seeking power. How can they know which way votes will go?

There was a time when political affiliation was passed on in a number of ways, through familial traditions, social class and geographic location. But it seems that the days when it was possible to identify a future Republican by their twinset and Mikimoto pearls are long gone. These days the youth of America are using their political leanings as yet another way in which to rebel against their parents.

While in days gone by the long haired youth would lean to the left, and the straight laced had a tendency to the right, world events in the last 10 years have caused a seismic shift in the way in which political opinions are formed. A rise in fundamentalism across the spectrum of culture has pushed unlikely Republican voters to the right, while some who might traditionally have been expected to support that hard line have instead been forced to question their ideals in light of the revelations associated with the decisions of recent governments.

For political players, assuming a vote on the basis of any of these factors is no longer an option, meaning that canvassing young opinion and refocusing efforts must be a priority for all parties.

Do You (And Your Children) Know What It Means To Be Liberal Or Conservative? It’s Not As Easy To Figure As You Think

By definition, the two terms which have generally come to define the two party system that exists in the United States, liberal and conservative mean two very different things as defined below.

Liberal“ A person who generally favors the ability of the government to step in when needed, particularly to help those who need it most in hard times. A classic example of this is the policies set forth by the New Deal initiated by Franklin D. Roosevelt. Liberals in the U.S. tend to come from a number of backgrounds, and at times their stance on issues can be seen as over the top.

Conservative – A person who would prefer that government be as small as possible, on the basis of the idea that people should, for the most part be responsible for their own well being. Conservatives in the U.S. tend to be of a slightly different demographic than the liberals, and sometimes conservatism and religion go hand in hand. This is not always a good thing however.

The definition of each of these terms is also much more complex than covered above, which is also one of the problems witch such labels. Even in all of their intended simplicity, there are complexities which ride under the surface in the face of the ideals they represent. In real life, to be liberal or to be conservative is a much more involved matter, and each person will undoubtedly have a slightly different viewpoint.

This is also true for every single candidate within a political race. The sooner that parents realize this, and teach their children, the easier the process of politics will be on everyone.
Life is not about ideals, or even the pursuit of ideals so much as it is getting to the root of the issues at hand. This is only possible to accomplish when complexities are acknowledged.

How To Become An Informed Political Consumer “ 3 Ways You Can Feel Better About Your Decisions In The Polling Booth

For someone who’s never voted before, the prospect of having to make a decision that can influence a country for generations to come can be rather overwhelming. The same can be said for those who have voted previously, simply because with every election cycle comes a new wave of political candidates and propaganda meant to sway people’s decisions.
This propaganda may, or may not be true, but getting to the heart of the matter and choosing a candidate based on the issues close to a person’s heart is important. This can be accomplished by using a few methods to educate oneself before an election.

1. Read, And Listen
In the time preceding an election, there are often a wide variety of resources available to potential voters, due to the fact that all candidates are basically trying to win support. Reading political blogs, listening to podcasts, policy or issue debates, National Public Radio or anything like that is a good way to gain both general and specific information about issues and the candidates that support those issues. Use the resources available, and be open minded.
2. Attend A Political Event or Rally
In an effort to win votes, with future potential constituents, many politicians travel around on particular circuits, in areas where they want to make the most impact. They may come and give a speech, meet with potential supporters, hold town hall style meetings to address the issues or any combination of the above. These events are a great way to learn, as well as to potentially get up close and personal with a political figure.
3. Ask For Advice
Do not be afraid to ask for others opinions. Whether it’s a teacher, pastor, parent or someone else, they can be a valued source of input in terms of political positions. Just know that it is OK to not agree with the opinion they give.
